Are Ajayi’s Carries in Jeopardy?

Boise State true freshman runningback Aaron Baltazar carries the ball against Air Force September 12, 2013

The Boise State running back was considered to be one of this year’s top sleepers in his position. At times he has looked fantastic, other times he’s looked average. Most recently, he has had trouble holding onto the football. In the last two games, he has lost fumbles in the red zone, which is never a good thing. Two weeks ago against Air Force, he fumbled in the red zone but was given the chance to redeem himself finishing with 125 yards and four touchdowns. Last week against Fresno State, he coughed it up again in a much more crucial situation. Boise’s Coach Petersen decided to bench him for the remainder of the game and turned to true freshman Aaron Baltazar. Baltazar ran hard in his increased time finishing with 92 yards and two scores on 18 carries in Boise State’s comeback attempt.

Fantasy Outlook: Ajayi is definitely the most physical back that the Broncos have. If he can learn to hold onto the ball, he could be a top fantasy running back. As of right now, Aaron Baltazar may see an increased workload as he has proven that he can perform. I don’t think that Ajayi will be benched for good, however, Baltazar definitely may be a someone to watch for those of you that are in deeper leagues. I think we should see almost a 50/50 split on carries between he and Ajayi
